Your Excellency,

Let me express my deep concern about the conviction of two Christians charged with blasphemy, Gulshare Masih and his daughter Sandal Gulshare. Before their arrest they lived a quiet life in the village of Gijra Chak near Faisalabad. After being accused of having torn out pages in the Qur?an, several hundred Muslims threw rocks at their house and then tried to burn it down. Father and daughter were arrested for safety reasons, but now they are being held in separate district jails of Faisalabad and are being accused of blasphemy.

As far as it is known there is no evidence whatsoever that the allegations are true, neither that Gulshare Masih nor his daughter had the intention of committing blasphemy nor that they did commit blasphemy. We therefore ask you to please take every possible step to free them and to ensure their safety. We hope that the recent promise of Shabaz Bhatti, your Federal Minister of Minorities Affairs, to abolish the blasphemy law will be taken seriously and will be fulfilled.
